Woodford Wesleyan Chapel

(OS SS218134)

This is a redundant Wesleyan Methodist graveyard in the hamlet of Woodford in Morwenstow. All that now remains, are the gravestones and the Sunday School building which formerly adjoined the old chapel. The chapel is long since demolished, the caretaker's rooms have been converted to a private dwelling.

The earliest record is the 1840 Tithe Map which shows and describes the location

The chronology describes the transition from Woodford to the new replacement chapel in Shop

There exists a register listing all the graves and occupants giving name (sometimes only "child") and reference letter and number keyed to a sketchmap.

Originally there were five rows of graves, lettered from East to West: A, B, C, D and E. Only rows B, C and E remain, but include re-located stones from rows A and D and are shown on a revised sketch map. This all occurred during tidying of the graveyard when all kerbs were removed and footsones were place in front of their corresponding headstones.

The result is a reduction of graves from 49 (52 burials) to 29 (39 burials). The losses are as follows, and which probably never had headstones.

The burials range from the earliest in 1860, to the last one in 1922, after which regular use of the graveyard ceased. In 1914, the chapel and congregation were transferred to a new venue; its newly constructed replacement - Shop Wesleyan Chapel.

The Monumental Inscriptions were recorded in 1981/2 .
